Hi, was on my balcony during Earth Hour tonight enjoying the moon with my new Dob. At one point the spotlights from the music festival in Centennial Park caught my eye. While cursing this source of light pollution, I just happened to be looking in the right direction to see a beautiful orange meteor travelling from the south towards the east. It flared, nearly disappeared, flared again, nearly disappeared, then flared again as it broke into a number of fragments before disintegrating.
Ironic, huh? If those stupid spotlights hadn't distracted me, I never would have seen the meteor.

BTW, I came in and told my wife what I'd seen, and she said: "Are you sure it wasn't more Russian space junk?!"
at 6.15 i was heading down the street from my place ,listning to abc starstuff on the radio,about russian sat, missing that plane in nz when i looked in front of me,to see this metoer heading south very bright.the sun was just setting and it was very bright,i assumed it could be seen from sydney.there was abrief bit on the news but imissed most of it.
My wife actually spotted it on the channel 7 news on the segment on the lights off on the harbour bridge while the reporter was on the habour shores....you could see it in the background heading down on a angle and leaving a trail......
later the replayed it in a news update and circled it coming down and said it was the ISS....
But that must have been some bright fireball!!
What a catch but...so I did get to see it...sort off...and soo did lots of people watching the news...
Missed it myself but rec'd call from a chap tonight, 1st April, who did manage to be in the right place.
He mentioned that it travelled from N/E to S/W. He also said that "it was white in appearance, glowed very brightly, (was brighter than Venus), split up & then disappeared..
Now how did the so called 'Press' get it so wrong with the direction of travel & the International Space Station?
We all know it goes the other way.
Pity I was inside...
