In honour of my dear Dad

I wouldn’t normally post personal events but my dear Dad passed away last Sunday at the age of 92 and I would like to mention him as he was part time amateur astronomer
He spent many hours on Wallis lake ( mid north coast in Forster) on his little Tinnie both fishing and prawning with his mate Keith
On many occasions during the new moon he would go down to the lakes shore in a dark area and observe the night sky with a chair , torch and his Binos, star charts and books sprawled everywhere and take in the sights of our universe ( his favourite star was Betelgeuse)
About 5 years ago when he could no longer star gaze at night by himself he gave me all his astronomy books , star charts and notes as he knew I was semi interested in everything space
He also was an avid weekly listener to local mid north coast radio which has a segment allocated to astronomy presented by Dave Reneke a well known north coast astronomer.Dad informally introduced me to Dave in 2019 and I email him every 6 months or so , sending him my astro photos and general chat etc..
So I suppose I can thank my dear old Dad for lighting the fire and kick starting my interest in this amazing hobby , Astronomy
Thanks Dad
RIP

I am sorry to hear of your loss Martin.
I lost my Dad last January and it is nearly more than I can bear.
I saw my Dad most days and he was really my best mate.
Thank you for sharing I found your post extremely touching.

Thanks so much everyone for your kind comforting thoughts
It is a difficult time but I have peace in knowing he lived a long and mostly healthy life and didn’t suffer towards his final days and hours
He told me keep doing what you love and do it as long as you can.Astronomy is a hobby which I love with a passion , there’s so much to see and do but so very little time in the overall scheme of things. So enjoy every minute of it
Thanks again everyone
This truly is a wonderful community

All the best and clear skies !!
