We might be heading to Scotland this xmas, or maybe the one after. I'd like to throw in a junket to see the northern lights while we're up there. Are our best chances from Iceland or Norway. I'm leaning toward Norway cos we can get further north and most likely get there by boat which will probably be more reliable in the middle of a Northern Winter.
Anyone done this? Any Tips. Very early planning stage just now.
A few years ago I was working in the northern UK for 4 months and we had a holiday in Skye for 3 weeks, and did glimpse the Northern Lights on a few evenings.
While the further north the better, the downsides with both Iceland and Norway are the cost - which can be quite extreme, the solar activity and the weather.
While you can be lucky, on a short trip there is a high likelihood of complete failure if the latter don't align.
Not good news Nick. Will be near impossible to drive around Scotland in the dead of winter let alone Norway. We were in Scotland Summer 2016 and most roads north had snow depth poles at least 3 meters tall along the route.
