Convertor: Decimal Degrees to/from Degrees-Minutes-Seconds

A friend asked me a while ago if I had seen a program to convert decimal degrees (ie ddd.mmm) to and from D-M-S format - he had found plenty of places online to do it, but needed something "stand alone" for when he was traveling with his laptop.

I had no such utility so I wrote this little spreadsheet for him (in Excel 2003 format) which I now find I use on occasions myself. I don't think I've posted it on IIS previously so if you have use for this please feel free to download it.

I had to put it in .zip format to post as this forum won't accept .xls files but the expanded version is only a 15kb file anyway.

Thanks Steve - I just downloaded it, unpacked it and used it. A very intuitive user interface meant that I did not require any training. Great job!

For those that don't have a spreadsheet program available, here's a browser option.

Just unzip the attached file, it will create a file called lat_conv.html. Load it into your web browser via the
File -> Load File option.
No need to have any sort of web server running.

It's javascript so should run in any browser (I've tested it with Firefox and IE)
It will convert from//to decimal notation and also gives the lat/long of the point on earth furthest from you, not sure how useful this is.

[Perhaps Mike could include this as an option on the IIS site?]

I have been faced with this problem many times so I wrote a filter program in quick basic. I keep the shell on file and modify the code to suit the job. The files usually only have about ten lines of qbasic and work from the command line.

Usually I have needed to convert a data base of celestial objects from one form to another. The programs read the files do the calcs and output the file in the new form. When you have 100 or so entries to change it cuts the edit time down to a couple of minutes.

Argo Navis will do that for you. If you plug in a location in the Location function in decimal format, it will convert it at a press of a button to d-m-s, and vice versa.
