Here are some images of Jupiter from Saturday morning (February 10). The righthand colour image shows the South Tropical Disturbance-1 (STrD-1) which is visible near the preceding limb. The middle image is in red light taken just prior to the methane band (889 nm) image at left and shows the features corresponding to the methane band image (for comparison). The methane band image shows the usual south polar brightening and the bright aspect of the GRS in methane light.
Visible to the south of oval BA is the small white oval A8. White ovals A1 and A2 follow BA. Not visible in the colour image is oval A0. Also visible are the red spots in the SEBs (one is near the STrD-1). Most of the SEB in the colour image shows the SEB Disturbance (SED) which has been tracked since 1999. Lastly, the red light image shows oval WSZ along the NEBn.
Attached is a small version of the data. I will make the full image available on my website soon.
Yes, Matthew captured STrD-2 which is not near oval BA. STrD-1 is just north of oval BA.
The oval near STrD-2 in Matthew's image is another small white oval. I saw a reddish colour in this oval on Feb 1 but couldn't image it (drive problems) and I've been trying since then to get an image confirming this.
Hi Zac, it took me a long time to realise that there were two STr disturbances... I kept wondering why oval BA would appear and then disappear :-) :-)
Finally this morning I realised that STrD-1 and STrD-2 were quite different things, and now it all makes sense. I've been quite distracted with work lately (that's my excuse anyway)!
ps you better call me 'Anthony' if you want to use my christian name...
