I was in my Son's office whilst he was doing a clean up/out.
I pulled a lap top out of the bin and asked if I could have it..simply to pull apart and have a look at the insides.. Whats wrong with this anyways.. Coffee spill and the screen is done for... getting it home I turned it on to see if it was only the screen, but it lit up..the bottom 1 cm of the screen does not show but I used the magnifyer that displays the missing bits..and now can see the missing bit on the top part of the screen.. so although a little strange to work it works... it will plug into the new 12vlt tv / monitor and display all I recon. Happy day for me.

I hear you Alex..I love going around to garage sales and I do find old bearings, model motors and gearboxes..great stuff for building mounts with!

Same here Trash and Treasure every Sunday morning, and then a couple of Garage Sales on the way home, it's amazing what one can pick up

I am going crazy here there is a council clean up within the week but folk are throwing stuff out now and there are people starting to turn up to assist recycling..I vowed nothing will I pick up other than a garden shed rather than be greedy. But the stuff they throw out desks, lamps, carpet, a full set of kitchen cupboards, nice pine furniture ... I see value and opportunity in everything so I must not start. But what is good is as I say many folk are recycling... If this stuff was up North it fetch 70% of its current retail sale price..no bargains up there. The lap top is working well I have been taking a bit more of a look and I am getting the hang of getting around the screen I can open and suht stuff so its great...but if you know how long I waited to get the new one I got before xmas it seems funny some how. But I sure can use it.
I want a connection up home and see if I can work the scope from here..my little mate looking after things although he cant read or write could handle it.. its just funny how what you want just turns up more or less when you need it.

Great find Alex,
our computers at work get replaced every two years, it's a bit silly as there is nothing wrong with them and they could easily go for for three or four years.
I was asking the techs what happens to all these computers and do they get donated to schools. To my surprise he reckoned that schools dont want them because they are not up to date, some are sold to ex govt surplus stores and the rest are dumped.
What a waste, the local govt claims times are tight and put everything up to raise more money yet they can afford to stick a new computer in every ones office whether it's needed or not.

If you have trash that someone else may treasure in the interest of recycling place an ad in the "freebie"section of the trading post or your local paper..The cost of the add is minimal to the saving of energy you contribute to the planet.

Hey Alex, those freebie sections are great aren't they. I got my ride on lawn mower through them it had a blown motor which cost me $300 in parts to fix but it was free to anyone who wanted to take it off their hands.
They have garage space and I have a great ride on mower.

Nothing wrong with second hand, or third hand for that matter.
I for one cannot tolerate the "Keeping up with the Jone's" syndrome.
In this world of limited resources, it is criminal to throw out perfectly good furniture/white goods etc just because it is last years style.

Had to laugh looking for some new long pants and the style I wanted only came with "wear and tear" they looked older than second hand but were the height of fashion as they say. I moved away from the Jones and never looked back .

My motto with thing like that is simple.
"If it's not broken, use it"
"If it's broken fix it"
"If it cant be fixed, find another use if possible and recycle".

We have a 1960 Pye B&W Telly, real retro style which is a perfectly good aquarium and a wonderful conversation piece.

i remember moving out of home and was driving down teh street to see a lapm in someones junk pile. chucked it in the car worked fine and was in good nick!

Friends were clearing out their shed for the council cleanup, I snagged off them a silky oak stool/small table that they had got off Granma. Closer examination after I got it home and cleaned it up, showed that it could be very old indeed.
The original screws look hand tooled, and the gothic style of the legs all point to this.
Trash and treasure.

That is wonderful and it may surprise you the monetary value of what you have there, another of my interests is early Australian wood work..I dont know all that much but lets face it as each year passes and each clean up passes things become much more rare.
I lost my collection in the bush fire and that was probably where I lost the most cash but I did not collect it as an inflation hedge I just like that sort of work.

It's a lovely simple piece of work. I've done nothing to "restore" it because it would only take away from it's worth. I dust it and oil it, that's it.
Mum gave me the old pantry cupboard that my Grandad made out of packing cases. Hubby wanted me to toss it because it's not very attractive, but Depression furniture is sought after now too.
It must have broken your heart to lose your collection.
