Magnetic Deviation

I have a quandry. (EDIT. I no longer have this quandry, the figures for lat/long/date where completely s?234wed up)
I have noticed that a number of people are quoting 11 degrees Mag Dev for Sydney
Here is a result from Geoscience Aust., Am I missing something? or should they really be using 5.498 degrees instead?
Australian Geomagnetic Reference Field Computation

sydney

Requested: Latitude -24o 00' 00", Longitude 135o 00' 00", Elevation 0 km, Date 2005/01/1
Calculated: Latitude -24.0000o, Longitude +135.0000o, Elevation 0.00 km, Epoch 2005.0000

Magnetic Field Components

D = 5.498 deg

Yes, it's a bit odd ... glad you worked it out!

For some reason if you just type in 'Sydney' the lat comes out as -24deg and long as +135.

This is the result for Sydney's approx location of -34deg and +151deg:

Requested: Latitude -34o 00' 00", Longitude 151o 00' 00", Elevation 0 km, Date 2007/01/1
Calculated: Latitude -34.0000o, Longitude +151.0000o, Elevation 0.00 km, Epoch 2007.0000

Magnetic Field Components

D = 12.538 deg

That's East, isn't it? So to align for magnetic South, point the compass at around SSE, is that right?

A picture is worth 1000 words...so here is my polar alignment stick which sits on my tripod head and points to the South Celestial Pole. The compass, pointing to the Magnetic South, allows me to set the 11° offset to the East.

Cheers
