10 inch dob vs 8.

Alrighty, I am officially about to make the decision on a Saxon dobsonian scope.


Is there much difference when looking through an 8 and looking through a 10?

I have head my heart set on a 10 for a very long time, how are galaxies in a 10 compared to an 8?

I have heard in a 10 you can get tinge of colour in nebulae.

How are the planets? are they very good in each scope?


I currently have a 4.5 reflector. But its time to move on

aperture is king! Buy the biggest you can afford/carry.

if you can handle the weight go the ten, dont know about colour though , you will see more of the faint fuzzy stuff in a ten.

If your heart is set on the 10" then buy that, otherwise you will always second guess the choice of the 8". Warning that increases in apeture can be addictive. However, above 10" the performance improvement is at the mercy of your Seeing conditions.

I've built and used Dobbies from 6" to 18" and found for visual observering that the 10" represented the "sweet spot"
Good resolution and light grasp.

How are planetary views at high mag? and DSO's compared to 8 you think?

The performance comes down to the quality of the optics, collimating, choice of eyepiece and your experience.
Practice pays dividends.
A 10" is capable of providing many hours, if not years, of satisfaction, what ever the target subject.

Hi Juno,

Have a range of dobs from 8inch to 16inch. In terms of view and portability - i think the 10 inch is ideally placed. I have found 12inch and above I need a trolley to move the scopes as they get from my perspective, bulkier and heavier to move.
The views in the 10inch are nice and bright when compared to the 8 inch. The view from the 10inch to 12 inch was only marginally brighter for me.

Planets i found looked better in the 10inch as the image is bright and i can see more detail for myself.

It sounds like you are already leaning towards the 10inch as others have picked up as well. I would recommend to follow your heart as you will always wonder if you got the 8inch and wonder what would the 10inch view would be.

Ps. I recommend budgeting for a collimation tool if you dont have one for the dob. I have a couple of laser ones i use.

I should of asked, what is the weight of the base for the 10? (tube version)

If you are not in a rush, i have found buying second hand is pretty good as well.

No have not had the opportunity, but I have seen some youtube videos on them, nevertheless I think I will be very happy with either a dob I choose.
