The Thing
Hi all, just been watching the original 1951 version of "The Thing" what a classic and in B/W. It's great to see where some of the remakes come from and how much they follow the original story lines. John Carpenter has followed the original story pretty closely while vamping it up a little for the modern day audience.
It's still one of my favourites.

What a Classic!!!!
It's right up there with the Blob, and the Creature from the Black Lagoon!

Have to agree there Ken. I do love a good old Sci Fi thriller and there are so many to choose from. The "Blob" is another classic with a young Steve McQueen and the remake didn't do it any harm either.

Love those old movies.
Has anyone seen "Destination Moon".
The screenplay was by my favorite author Robert A Heinlein.
I've not seen it myself, and I'd love to get my hands on a copy.

Sorry JJJ, I dont think that I have seen that one. There used to be a website called "Reel Classics" that dealt with old and hard to get movies but it has been a few years since I looked at the site.
You could check there if they are still operating.

The storyline of John Carpenter's version of the movie actually followed some aspects of the original story as written by the great John W. Campbell better than the earlier movie did.
I love both movie versions, but the 1951 story was simplified a bit - in particular it left out the whole terrifying theme of: if they imitate us perfectly, how do we know who is still "us", and who is them, which gave the original story it's name "Who Goes There?"
Both great movies, have them both in my DVD collection.
Favourite quote from John Carpenters version:
"There's nothing wrong with me, but if there was I'm all better now"

Hi Steve, my favourite quote would have to be when they first encounter the creature.
"What is it", "I dont know, but it's wierd and P***** off"

I havent seen the orginal but the John Carpenter version is a great one, scared the hell out of me as a kid .The bit where Kurt Russell is testing the men tied to the chairs to see who had the alien virus/blood is a chiller  Gazz havent played the PS2 game yet must try it {with curtains drawn  }

Loved the movie, but hated what happened to the dogs
Fave line: After the severed head grows legs and walks away, "You've gotta be f**kin shi**ing me!"

Hi Ric,yep, that one's a classic. John Carpenter's version stuck pretty much to similar lines as the original but of course was far more advanced with the cinema technology techniques. In John Carpenter's version, I almost spewed when the dog's face split like a banana.... eeeeeekkk!Another top film of the 60's was called Forbidden Planet. This had Walter Pidgeon in it and also the well used 'Robbie the robot'..... it's one of the best films I can remeber as a kid. You can still get it... here's a link( http://www.amazon.com/Forbidden-Plan...958)CheersRich

Hi Rich, I remember Forbidden Planet, we used to go and see them at the Kids session on a Saturday arvo at the local cinema, I reckon all the parents used to drop us off and then all meet at the pub for a couple of quiet hours.
We used to get two movies for the price of one and we saw some classics like Godzilla, Godzilla and the Smog monster, Mothra, Gamma and Fantastic Voyage to name a few.
Gazz, I didn't know the Thing was on PS2, I wonder if it's on PC as well
cheers
