Samyang 14mm F/2.8 First Light

Picked this up off Gum Tree earlier this week and managed to have a play with it last night. One of my jobs this afternoon is trying to figure out how to take a reasonable flat frame! Ultra Wide Angle and even illumination I think is going to be a bit of a headache. Maybe get some darks tonight to help with some contrast.

Optically... It's soft. However compared to most of the lens' in this range (except the Nikon 14-24mm), they're all pretty soft and have reasonable distortion and other optical aberrations.

Am I happy with it? For the price point it certainly does the job. I think I'll end up using it with my Nikon D700 (it is VERY forgiving on lens') for super wide field. 3.91 micron pixels + no anti-aliasing filter isn't the best lens for a $350 SWA 14mm lens

You're looking at it
With an APS-C (my D7200) it gives almost the same FOV as what you get naturally with your eyes so it is crazy wide. This makes it a reasonable landscape lens because it is largely WYSIWYG.

I just sent a copy of the Samyang 14mm F2.8 back as it was bad in the corners. unusable bad.

Sigma 14mm F2.8 Art is what I am looking at. Irix 15mm F2.4 also gets good reviews.

Samyang 12mm F2 for APS cameras is quite good.

No, that's what I mean, after this image what is left to photograph? everything is in it, that's it, done

Thanks Greg. The coma isn't great with the lens I've got but it is kinda what I expected after seeing how it performed on Lenstip.com
I'll have to check out those lens' and see how they go. There are a lot of Nikon 14-24mm lens' that pop up though, a lot but then and cannot think of a use for them hehe

I am kinda tempted to splash out and get a Nikon 14-24mm as it has considerably better full frame performance and doesn't have some weird distortion. Borrow a D810 and go really wide

The individual 300s subs have really messy stars but they're good in the stack. Quite happy with the performance of the lens given it's price and shortness.

It is easy in that you don't even need a tracking mount. Just a tripod and 30s exposures will do fine as long as you manually revenges every so often

If you're not pixel peeping then there is no real difference between this lens and one 3x the price (Nikon 14-24)
