The Needle Galaxy NGC4565

NGC4565 (also known as the Needle Galaxy or Caldwell 38) is an edge-on spiral galaxy about 30 to 50 million light-years away in the constellation Coma Berenices.

Maximum elevation from my location is about 42 degrees, so I have been picking at it each night on top of the arc for about a week. Edge to edge it's quite a large object in the 10" F4. I haven't imaged this galaxy before, but I think it's kind of cute. Looks like a UFO!

GSO 10" F4 Newtonian, 867 x 30 second unguided subs (poor camera) or about 7.2 hours, full spectrum modified Canon 1100D, Baader MPCC MKIII, Baader UV / IR cut filter or Semi APO filter for some stacks. Stacked in 7 groups in DSS, processed in photoshop.

Oh, and I left it on an angle just for Ron.

Wow, what an excellent result. The equipment list reminds me of back to basics organically grown cherry tomatoes. No chemicals, but delicious.

I'm growing them too. Like my subs, you have to eat a lot to get enough to make one regular tomato lol. Thanks M&T.

For a DSLR image this is very good indeed.

Well done.

Very impressive Kevin, it does look like an alien UFO and I like the smaller galaxies nearby as well.

Cheers

Thanks Bo. Yes, something different from the normal southern targets.
