Should I just delete this or report to police?

I received text message this morning saying:

"Good morning father and condolence to you and your family.
I have your number now. Just thinking of you because this cyclone is big
be safe father and take care. mellet"

The phone number its sent from is: +61 413 697 620

So far I found this much about this number:

Phone to locate: 0413 695 620 Phone is active: Yes
Phone network: SingTel Optus
Cell tower location: Supported

I take it you don't know who it's from? I'd reply to the message and advised they sent it to wrong number if that is the case.

If you think the message hints at a risk to safety of Mellet or his Dad I would report it to the Police. They have ways of handling these types of things.

NEVER REPLY! That gives them a list of active addresses to target.

Absolutely, - never reply to strange texts or emails. Your details are worth money in these 'markets' and by replying they know your details are correct and the value shoots up accordingly!

I heard that on a radio prog about internet security.

Hi Paul,

In the past six months I have noticed a change in spam trends and wonder if anyone else has noticed these changes.

Instead of winning big prizes, they are now just targeting low value prizes. I keep getting spam advising me I have won a $50 voucher from Coles, Woolworths, etc. People are more likely to open something like that, not me thought.

I complete concur with you, never open anything you don't know or weren't expecting, and even then, you still need to be hyper vigilant. So far, I have never been caught by a scam, but that is only because of my paranoia about online security.

Cheers Pete
