Funeral Insurance
I notice the adds and they say prompt payout.
I wonder how prompt on a death certificate or probate.
I have never run into anyone who benefited under one, any one out there with an experience.
I often wonder if the insurance company were difficult how sucessful one would be getting money from them.
The executor would be able to sue but such a small amount I wonder if you would bother.. Do companies play on that and keep their hands in their pockets?
A y stories please tell.

Some stipulate that they pay on notified death --but only a pirtion the rest is payed out later . On probate I expect.
Personally I think death insurance is a rort.
A better way would be to buy a pine box or build one and pay a deposit at the crem.....

Funeral insurance is a big con. Just keep enough money in the bank to cover your exit, which usually is not much. Insurance companies make good money out of scaring people to death. My kids will inherit everything, so a little incidental expense won't concern them - nothing compared to all the years of private school fees.

My thoughts are they are probably a big con.
I hoped someone would provide a specific example.
I am not personally worried about myself I will just wander off like an old dog and die in the bush.
I kept the old boat to use for a one way trip to the South Pole...but its gone.
Money is not the problem I just feel they are probably not doing the right thing and given the customer base it is unlikely that complaints present.
I don't like insurance companies some of the law you would not believe.

Reminds me of that wonderful old movie "On the Beach" about nuclear fallout killing off everyone and the submarine sailing off with the doomed crew.
I have also suggested to my kids that i want to be left in the bush somewhere but probably have no say in it unless i put it in writing.

I had a wild idea to construct a cement sphere, solid mix and plenty of reo and stainless steel with a place to sit..have my body placed in it and cemented in...this would sit on this back ridge and in time the sphere would roll down into the river and eventually to the ocean..when the planet blows up hopefully it would stay in one piece and get blasted into space, in time to be recovered by an intelligent species who using the DNA will reconstruct me on a planet a long way from here.

I'm hoping to go out with such a "big bang", there wont be anything left to deal with.... I often think about taking some of those who so richly deserve it with me... but alas... collateral damage always makes me think twice...

Had a lecture from a gentleman from Le Pine about the pitfalls of funeral insurance. They were advocating either prepaid funerals or as above, savings. Perhaps set it aside to a high interest (laughable at the moment) savings or an index/mutual fund or etf that regularly returns slightly better?

Alas, Concrete with reo has a life expectancy of a bit over a century. The alkalinity of the cement is neutralised after about that time and then the conc absorbs moisture. That starts the corrosion process and your conc sphere begins to crack and decompose due to "concrete cancer". It explains why our great buildings require constant maintenance and rarely last a century.
Good news is, it means our long term impact on the planet will be minimal except for massive structures like Hoover Dam (abt 30,000 years if I remember correctly...)
Bad news is, you will smell pretty bad when your ball cracks Alex....

Would not touch with a 40ft pole.
There's no guarantee that a company you pay into now, will go the decades until the claim without going bankrupt. You become a deceased unsecured creditor. About as low on the food chain as it gets.
Your family may not know about the policy.
Your family may have trouble making the claim.
I suspect that the rates are so attractive due to the very low payout rate.
Glend seems to have the best advice. Put the money in a savings account. You can put it in your will that that money is to be used for your funeral.

For the record I can afford a conventional burial I was interested to know if anyone had a bad experience with these type of insurers.
I would not go with one of those plans...unless they could deliver the sphere.
So if cement won't work what can I use.. I am inclined to build a sphere.

Can I just say - they've banned certain types of advertising, Funeral Insurance should have been one of them

If you made a sphere you could, after inserting your corpse, top it off with epoxy resin. That has a pretty long life expectancy.

I went through this with my mums funeral service several months back.
My father had paid into a plan some years before and had around 8k available . From memory and its not a good time to really have clear recollections , I think the fund did pay out promptly , we went with a director who arranged everything and took care of all the paperwork side of things , there is a fair bit going on in regard and to be honest money isn't the thing on your mind at the time .
I would suggest though having around 10 k aside , with cremation costs ,transport and storage ,directors fees , chapel fees and light refreshments , no flowers , newspapers ,a really basic service, my dad still got an $1800 invoice on top of his 8 K, there was no pressure on us in regard to pay up right away .
you stay well Alex

Hi Jennifer good idea.I had thought of a resin all over.
It is hard to build something that will last forever.
Maybe a solid ball of steel with a screw cap.
Placement inside covered in chemistry cals that turn bone to crystal.
With a gold leaf book where it is written that I was the only ruler of Earth and a list of rules so I become the center of worship to species that finally open the tomb and they can take care of ongoing maintenance.

Hi Graham
Thanks for that, very interesting.
Probably worth getting a machine in and at least get a hole dug and make a box out of form ply.
Couple of fruit trees to take advantage of the freshly turned soil and nutriment.
Work a deal with the guy who digs the hole to fill it in later at the price.
And put the trees in.
