I have purchased one at kmart for $70 which I purchased to get parts for a 3 string I was making.
It is not bad.
I have still to get used to it but the quality blows me away.
It came with a small amp as well.
I reckon if I ran it thru my large amp it would do the job.
My view is they dont work until the amp is right up.
My Gibson needs full bore approach and when its cranking it throws all sorts of "additional" sounds.

Who is the guitar for Geoff?

I also purchased a monteray? acoustic from JB hifi and notice they have an electric version I think $150 (not sure) but whatever I thought it was good value.
The quality is amazing beyond fault really.

Dont know what's in Gosford. Just up the F3
https://www.musoscorner.com.au
Are good.

Don't know your budget. But Squier made goog fender copies. Guitar/amp packages.

Many of the uber cheapies in chain stores will cause more pain than music.

It's a tough question to answer not knowing the person who it's for.

There's cheap and there's cheap. If it's a young person who may not commit to learning then probably look at the lower end of cheap, if they can already play a bit then look at the higher end of cheap.

Then it really helps to know what style of music they're likely to want to play........Fender styled guitars usually have single coil pickups whereas Gibson/Epiphone style have humbuckers and this makes a considerable difference to the amplified sound/tone, then to confuse things even further, if heavy metal is their thing then they may imagine themselves playing a pointy guitar and not one of the more "traditional" styles.

ChrisV's suggestion of Musos Corner in N'cle should be heeded, they keep a good range and the staff are virtually all musos themselves, the fact that I've been good friends with the owner for over four decades and bought a crap load of gear from there is incidental. The fact that more than once over the years they've been voted best music retailer in Aust., should give you an idea.

Give us more info about the potential recipient and you'll probably get a better guide from us.
BTW......Chris, does the name Turtlerock mean anything to you?

for my 16 year old grand daughter Alex
she allready plays piano, alto and baritone sax, and this year has been learning guitar at school.

it appears that as of this evening, she is now the owner of a Monterey Sunburst - don't know what model
cost her $95 plus the cost of a small amp

thanks for your input guys

Probably get something pretty good.
She probably would benefit from the best you could afford.
I think you get to various levels and she maybe at the stage where a good instrument would encourage her.
A good second hand would see you get a better instrument but you need to know what you are looking at, plus most kids want a new one, and I would suggest you ask her what she likes.
You know how it can go they often have a brand in mind and if its not the exact unit you just waste your money.
My daughter if it not what she wants I dont get it and we are both happier.
I would ask her and if you dont want to spend that much dont buy anything.
I dont think she would go for the $70 one for example.
And the more I play it there better I like it but as its box says for 6 yr old and up you would be wasting money.

buy an acoustic guitar for her. go nylon strings because they're easy on the fingers ..and buy a tuner ..unless she's good at tuning
If she is musically minded .. the best doesn't buy talent ....

Sorry Geoff misread your post.
I thought she had the monterey and was moving up from there.
Same brand as my acoustic and hers looks great.
A guitar sounds better the more you play it.
Tell her to learn and practice the pentatonic scale or "the blues scale".
If shecant find it I would be surprised but if not I could draw it for her, but with it if you can wistle the tune you can play it...

Glad she got the guitar sorted (no thanks to our haphazard advice).

Ausrock Chris.
Turtlerock - i had to google it. Looks a bit after my time. My active musical time was about 76 - 85 (punk, post-punk). Now purely acoustic (flamenco) at home where i disturb nobody except the family.

No probs......it's just that there's a Chris V in that "neck of the woods" too that has a studio in Sydney.....thought it would be too much of a coincidence.
