Astronomy Outreach Christmas Surprise

If anyone here is feeling a little jaded about Christmas. A little down about Brexit or Trump, perhaps things haven't been going well and you could use something to restore your faith in humanity, I might have just the thing.

I recently found out about an eight year old boy whose mother's entire Christmas budget for the kid was ten dollars. I decided to see if there was something I could do about this situation. I put out a call on my local community Facebook page for a telescope for the kid. As you know scopes are popular gifts, but they are usually on the very small side, giving disappointing views and not all that easy to master. Consequently, they are often boxed up after a couple of nights and rarely opened again.
I was hoping I could get one of these scopes, give it to the kid and teach him how to get the best out of it. I got three. Two were exactly as I predicted and I'll find other deserving kids to give them to. The third gift has left me stunned, completely shocked, probably one of the greatest acts of personal generosity I have witnessed.

A 200mm f 1200mm Sky-Watcher Dob in perfect condition.

I had a delivery guy turn up an hour after the scope was delivered to me and I showed it to him and told him the story, he gave me a hundred dollars to give to Mum as well.

So, maybe you could do something similar? There are a lot of 8 year olds and a lot of unused scopes out there.

I have just had three donations of intro books for the kid too...

Does anyone have a 90 degree finder?
