Talk & Spectroscopy Gratings NSW 3-Feb-2017

Friday 3rd February 2017 - 8:00pm

Topic: Stellar Spectra

Speaker: Lesa Moore, ASNSW

Venue: Epping Creative Centre - 26 Stanley Road, Epping, NSW

Abstract: This talk will discuss colours seen in the spectra of stars, production of the spectrum and the features in it, and classification of stars based on their spectra. Sample gratings will be available for examination and use and, weather permitting, some star viewing will take place using the speaker's telescope.

Biography: Lesa Moore has been an amateur astronomer and member of the Astronomical Society of NSW (ASNSW) since 1986. Her astronomical activities have included running courses in basic astronomy and working at three public-access observatories: Koolang Observatory (1992-2010), Macquarie University Observatory (2002-2009) and Sydney Observatory (2008-2014). She made a gradual transition into professional astronomy through her studies at Macquarie University. She attained an honours degree in 2003 and completed a Master of Philosophy in Astronomy in 2008. For five years, Lesa lectured in physics to nurses and environmental science students at the Australian Catholic University, North Sydney. Currently, Lesa enjoys education and public outreach activities with Princess Cruises, Tara Anglican School for Girls and the ASNSW.

Enquiries: ASNSW

Please help spread the word and let's have many of us hear the talk plus examine and use the gratings –see it for real.

ASNSW is among the leading Societies that now features and re-introduces this important science for members and the public. Working together as a team across Australia since last year, this talk was initiated by ASNSW as part of the October ‘Month of Spectroscopy’ (ideas for actions).

Hope many more initiatives take place….. all over the southern hemisphere…. to enjoy and study the south celestial special treasures.

Sorry, glend, we don't have facilities to upload live stream. Visitors are always welcome at the meetings, if you live in the Sydney area.

Streaming is a great idea; thanks, glend. Or recording, to later become a resource.

It may or may not suit this time round but either way it would be great to explore. Even a trial recording, host and speaker permitting (not an obligation), could be valuable in more ways than one. Our IIS community has people with awesome skills and equipment. Once the can-do’s connect up, there are worthy events and undertakings that can happen.

We need to grow our understanding…. just how do we know what we know about deep sky objects? Please see messages about the need for more participants in science -interdisciplinary, especially ‘crying out’ spectroscopy. Anyone can start -anywhere, just head that way.

Whether Pro-Am or not
it begins with ‘number’ of people at the basic level, for self or for Outreach, that will pyramid or factor out to what SASER and BOSS have achieved.

Hope many can attend this talk. Hope more give talks and workshops and demo's and see what we can do!
