Veil Nebula West (NGC 6960)

Last one from me for Qld Astrofest 2016. Single frame effort on the Western Veil region. Snapped for an hour or two each evening in between M8/M20 and before M31 high enough to start acquisition.

I'd love to do a veil mosaic at some point, but a big effort with my current FOV. Went after the east end last year, so tried for the "Witches' Broom" and smidge of Pickering's triangle this time.

LHaRGB 80:60:35:35:35 minutes (All unbinned - 10min Lum, 15min Ha, 5min RGB)
Taken with the FSQ106/QHY9/OAG/HEQ5Pro rig combo.

Bit soft in one corner, but pleased to bring out some dust in the bottom half I haven't managed to "see" before. Larger version here.

Very fine. I like the teasing hints of further shock fronts at top right.

Very nice, Rob, and appropriately upside down compared to all the renditions I see from Notherners

Thanks M&T. Decided not to make the colours too eclectic, but fascinating object. JPM's 3D animation some time ago was a revelation for me on this one.......

Thanks Rick. I did ponder flipping it to see the "Witches' broom" in the traditional orientation, but decided I liked it as it was

Rob, Norton Antivirus tells me that the link that you have provided immediately below is to a known dangerous web site.

Was that the Astroanarchy link (3D Veil?).
(Hopefully not my Google pics a/c link?)

Another good northerly pickup Rob. Crossing the meridian at a worthwhile 35deg above the Northern horizon from Duckadang, it seems to be one of the cool things to hit when at Astrofest

At some 10deg lower from here in Canberra, it isn't worth shooting really.

Nicely done as usual Rob. In my young and stupid days I did go for this from a spot in northern Canberra with a good horizon. Needless to say it wasn't very good.

Cheers

Thanks Mike and Steve. I've always worked on the assumption I'm unlikely to be imaging in the northern hemisphere any time soon, so priority gets given at dark skies with good northern horizon to any low northern objects on my wish list.

Which reminds me of bagging a few brief subs on M101 at 7 degrees between trees many years ago. Now that was a bit of astro-lunacy.....

That's excellent Rob

I once viewed M51 visually at the same elevation with my 12" Meade SCT from just outside Canberra...was little more than an indiscriminate barely perceptible smudge

Nice shot! I live in the USA, and here is a picture of the Veil that I took in late July:

Rob, I'm no longer getting that bizarre message from Norton Antivirus about the Astroanarchy link. I can only assume that Norton briefly messed up. Huge apologies. The 3d animation looks very cool.

Hi Joe. Nice work. Lots of detail coming through with your aperture and focal length!

No probs Mike. I certainly found the animation gave me a new perspective on the original supernova. Hopefully the layout reflected in fact.

Hi Rob,

Great capture - one of the many advantages of being in QLD is you get to go north a bit!
Cheers,
Tim

Thanks Tim
And you'd get to see a lot more northern sky than most of us from Cairns

Nice one Rob. A challenging object but you get to shoot it every other night. I see it only once a year.

Nice Rob, it is a cool object. One of the advantages of living in the tropics is you can get some to the north. i would have liked to continue with mine but the wet has arrived early so no more until next year.
I want to continue with mine, more data and a mosaic to include the eastern veil plus some OIII.
