Canberrians

Looks like we be loadin' up the truck and movin' to Canberry (ACT that is, politicians, tax payin' dollars...) in late July/early August. I know a few of ye be living in what is our so-called capital city, so which suburbs are recommended for decent rental accommodation until we can settle into buying a home?

Was thinking Garran is full of reprobates and Takahashi addicts that wander the streets at night, and the hills are chock full of big Italians, so may be best to avoid those locales

Yeah, my job offer went boobies-up, so it's now up to wifey dear holding the can down at ANU with her brain that shows no bounds... meanwhile I'll be left to show the kids the AWM 365 days of the year... well, just the aviation halls anyways

...seriosuly?

Maaate, do what I did back in 2012 when we had to move back to Canberra, say "Ok darlink, as long as we can rent a rural property on the outskirts of Canberra, until we look to buy" Worked a treat and was a fabulous experience (30min from the CBD with dark skies!!!!) for two years

I'm looking at a Tak later in the year too so maaaaaate, we could catch up and after all the the hugs, Commi talk and Vodka ...talk APO's

Hey Lewis, definitely would not recommend Garran, light pollution central with the hospital taking up most of the area and Careflight and Westpac Rescue choppers flying in 24/7. We are under the flight path and could probably grab the buggers as they go over our roof.

Our daughter lives in Florey, works and studies at the ANU, takes 20 minutes to get to work. Rents are more reasonable on that side of town (Belconnen area). From the southside it takes an eternity to get into the city (ANU).

Welcome to the jungle, Lewis!

Renting? What size family? I can't speak much for houses (as rentals) but for units, assuming you're happy with one as short term accommodation (and no backyard/balcony astronomy until you buy a house), most of the action is in Kingston, Narrabundah or Griffith (inner south). I'd stay out of other 'popular' areas like Braddon as their services and the local environment are still a bit lacking IMHO.

I accumulated about 9 years renting in Kingston before buying a place and was always happy there. If you need advice on particular developments, I know quite a few of them intimately.

For houses to buy, the mid-north seems to be booming around Gunghalin - Nicholls, Crace, Forde, Harrison, etc. Over towards Belconnen (or beyond) is certainly cheaper but not quite as well served (or as nice an area IMHO). If money's no problem, try the inner north/south - Yarralumla, Forrest, Red Hill, Ainslie, Campbell, etc. I don't especially like Woden Valley, but O'Malley is allegedly quite nice.

Despite Canberra being a small place, because everyone tries to go to/from work at the same time, we do actually have traffic congestion, so check the traffic routes before you choose a place.

I'm down at the arse end of Canberra. Like, the furthest actual suburb down south. Beautiful skies.

The guy directly across the street is moving out this week and the place should be up for rent shortly.

Get in touch.
