Jupiter From Melbourne

Took an opportunity in a short period of clear sky before clouds rolled in last night to take a shot of Jupiter. Seeing was fair but what worked out well was the GRS was in view at the same time.

1 minute video of around 3000 frames taken with a Canon 550d and processed in Registax. 200mm f5 Newtonian with 9mm eyepiece and a 2X barlow.

I guess it's a gamble with when to pull the pin on a session. I did notice that prior to the clouds coming over the seeing deteriorated which confirmed my decision to quit for the night. It was getting late and I do need my beauty sleep! Thanks for your comments and compliments guys, when living in Melbourne you never know what the weather will do next.

just had a quick peek a few minutes ago, the GRS is facing us but it was still too light to image. Lets hope conditions are good tonight

Hi Mickoid - great picture!

i take it you were using the camera in 720p mode to get the requisite 50 fps?

What ISO were you set to - as this is quite a short exposure time per frame?

No, I shoot the planets with the 550d video crop mode which features on this model and the 60d, it crops the full HD to 640 x 480. So it uses a small portion of the 1080 x 1920 array, thus effectively enlarging the image. Great for getting focus and a fast frame rate. I shot Jupiter at 800iso because it is so bright. Seeing was only fair that night so I would imagine I could do better given good seeing conditions. Hope this answers your question.

Wildly fluctuating atmospherics in melbourne last night, the North wind started up about 9pm making for really crappy viewing, I need to buy a few acres out in the bush......

I agree, set up for a good night imaging only to find Mars dancing and bouncing like a ping pong ball. Very bad, stayed out till after midnight hoping things might settle down but they didn't. Packed everything up and went to bed and thought-well that was a waste of time!
