Observatatory design. humbly need f/back. B4 its 2 late

Astrofund Depletion Program

Stage 3

Concept Wireframe Sketch

designed on a piece of paper , with a pencil. HB LOL

Just some of the considerations with stage 3 of the Astrofund depletion program. feel free to chip in anything I may have overlooked. :>)

Building oriented corner shown toward North. This allows for pier offset toward northern corner of dome,,,remember "Southern Hemisphere" forks point south. Pier structure will be concrete block approximate weight 3 tonnes, to false floor level , 6" diameter concrete filled heavy wall pipe from ground to wedge. False floor hight approx 3'.

Dome structure will be supported on 4 permenant RHS post set vertical in concrete Pad at midpoint 4 outside of walls, isolated from pier block. at 7' in hieght atop these RHS posts will be weight support rollers with cyclone lockdowns, intermediate rollers and support beams x 4 located on subfloor support of false floor, at midpionts towards building corners, atop these weight support rollers and lateral guide rollers, movable to fine tune dome rotation centre. around roof weather flashing.

Tthe building corner,s to be C-section steel purlin, with tophat run horizontal in two places equispaced, Building clad in colorsteel. False floor subfloor constructed from C-section purlin bolted to dome support RHS posts and bracketed to buiding corner C-section. Safety rail and gate to be provided around stairwell. Floor material to be 1" thick strandboard with various lift up panels for access to Cabling, Climate control, and underfloor storage facilities.

Climate control under floor with vents in redundant corner spaces to enable cooling of dome room to start early afternoon

Warmroom window provided for viewing of equipment, with full remote capability 2 computers will be used , one in the dome with LCD flat panel monitor, to act as remote terminal for USB and serial devices, equipment and image capture, connected via Network to Warmroom workstation.

Master shutdown Breaker, for dome rotation, dome shutter control, and Scope power located in warmroom.

Overall size of structure, 5 meters by 8 meters, hight at dome apex 4.5 meters

Rationale

Building ,Round Versus Square.
Easier to construct, and provides for ample storage under redundant corners of dome room.
Easier to add to at later stage, for needs, ie: pool table , bar , Home theatre , WC etc :>)

Steel versus Timber
Too many creatures like to eat timber in this country.
Easier to fabricate and then refabricate when you stuff something up.

Dome versus roll-off
A mistake, wish i hadn't

Dome Automation
It will happen eventually, interim measure plain old hand paddle control, designed with future automation in mind.

>>>>>>>

Other Considerations

Concrete pier should extend from offset to north to centre of dome, for any future ALT AZ gear.
Dome Park position must have 12V contact charging piont for shutter motor battery.
NW and NE sides of the building should be thermally insulated.
Double door system between warm room and dome, ?
Alarm System and CCTV. CCTV to be ported to website.
Viewing deck mazzanine floor.

Eventually.
Fully automated Remote driven Observatory, with website frontend,

Just a question....

Why only the NE and NW walls insulated? At your latitude (about 12 deg S?) for three months of the year the sun is south of you... hmmm... wet season???

I expected maybe all walls insulated, or the two west walls to reduce heat transfer from arvo sun to help your cooling??? Just a thought.

Regardless I am impressed!

17 and a half S Sheeny. Its a good point though, Ill probably end up insulating all of it, condentation is another problem up here..

WOW!!!...that is one engineering feat!!!..very impressive indeed!!
Just a thought..that's an awful lot of concrete to work with..have you allowed some sort of coarse damp around the pier section..in the tube section..and anything made of metal...a product like Lanko 322 cement waterproofer would be ideal..this would help to prevent rising damp into the tube..steel purlins etc..cost is about $15.00 for 5 litres.
Use an exterior wood preservative or decking finish on all timber framework..even paint the cut ends with bitumen paint..(a couple of coats works well on exposed steel too!)
A good air filtration system..(see Clark Rubber for some filter foam)..the less dust the better!!!
Cork floor tiles work well as wall insulation...(and make a good pin-up section!)
Cheers!!

Great Astro. just perfect.

Whilst the rising damp is not an issue, the dust certainly is, Im going to do something about that. and I like your idea a lot "I had not considered dust ingress from the climate control

.. a damp seal between the pier and surrounding footings I can get away with the concrete pier is 3 feet high or there about wello below the floor and a good distance for damp not to travel to the pier assy. Im just going to styrofoam between the elements on pouring, and use petrol to disolve it...

Cheers Mate

If it were me I'd be putting in a small air conditioner and running to dehumidify the air daily in the wet season.

Aahhh...17 and a half... 12... astronomically speaking we're on the same planet aren't we?

I was shooting from deep cobweb infested memories there! It's about 25 years or so since I lived at Edmonton near Cairns. I think the de-humidifier would be a great idea too! The things that grew at Edmonton!!! Not quite so bad at Ravenshoe but still significant I bet!

Actually painting the Dome that glaringly dazzling white , you can see, keeps it a lot cooler than the o/side temp. allthough does cause snowblindness...

LOL
