Camera lens adapter for CCD cameras

Hi there all.

Over the past 12 months (or even longer) I have been working on a little contraption to enable me to use my camera lenses with the Atik 11000.

Finally, after lots of tinkering and modifying and learning to tap threads in Al blocks and use a drill press and pull my hair out and waiting for clear skies, it is finally finished and in almost perfect working order.

As you can see from the pictures, it is all mounted on a trimmed off sleeper. The imaging camera sits on an Al block. This is driven backwards and forwards by an M4 bolt inserted into my Orion Accufocus motor. This is the focus mechanism, driving the camera itself towards or away from the lens.

The lens attaches to a Nikon to canon adapter that has been butchered and inserted into the pictured pieces of timber (and yes it is all held in place with Meccano!)

The lens holder folds forward (hence the hinge) to allow access to the camera to change filters (still coming up with a way to integrate a filter wheel!)

It all looks very rough and crude (which it is). It's all cobbled together with stuff lying around the house.

The most painful part has been aligning the camera. In between clouds, that has taken about 2 weeks to get right, but finally nailed it last night.

This all means, with my existing camera lenses, I can take shots at 18, 55, 75, 100, 150, 300 and 500mm. And in theory should give a nice flat field.

Anyway, that's enough showing off.

Hopefully a run of clear skies are coming!

Cheers,

DJ Scotty

Thanks Rick.
I still think there is some flexure present with the guide scope. So until I can integrate an oag i am limited to about 10 minutes subs.
Better than nothing! 😆

Very innovative Scott! Thumbs up from me too.

Maybe I would just add a nice bright red coat of high gloss paint on woodwork and steel, you know, to make it go faster!

I also image with camera lenses on an Atik, and find the Rate Training (in Comet Tracking) in PHD2 to be invaluable in dealing with a small amount of differential flexure between the guide scope and imaging cam.

The flex is still there off course, it's just that the comet tracking constantly adjusts the lock position to compensate.

Thanks for that information Sam. Definitely something to investigate further.
May I ask how you focus your lenses?

I manually focus the lens barrel, which does take a bit of practice (using 135 and 200 lenses). I put on a 2 second loop or so in Artemis Capture and zoom the screen area in on some stars. Just a case of making as small movements as possible on the lens focus.

I thought about a buying a Teleskop Express Microfocuser, but have been able to manage so far. Once you get good focus, it's pretty stable to temperature change.

Hi Sam. I had a quick look at comet tracking in phd2. Looks good. Looking at my images i may have licked the flexure problem. But the next 30 minute ha sub will tell me if I have fixed it.
Currently imaging 10 minutes rgb which look pretty tight.
