First Attempt With 5D

Hi All.

This is my first attemp at wide field with the 5D.

It is only a cropped version of one jpeg Image, as i'm having difficulty with Image Plus, and dont quite know how to go about the combining and stacking stuff.

I did take 10 lights, 10 darks, and 16 flats, but there still on the computer until i know what to do with them

The image was taken with 5D and 135mm @ F/2.0 by 120 sec's each, mounted on camera platform, on EQ5 mount, and Orion was still very low on the horizon, so it's not great.

Once i figure out how to use Image Plus, ill post something more worthy.

PS. tonight looks like it will be clear so i might attempt some more shots when Orion is much higher, at least i'll have them on the computer to play with once iv'e learnt Image Plus.

Are you capturing in JPEG or RAW and converting to JPEG?

I,m capturing in Raw and Large jpeg at the same time, the 5D can do that, so you have one of each when you take the shot.
You can then choose to process either.
But because i am not to familar with Image plus yet, i have a heap of raws on my computer ready to be processed.....when i know how

If you have the latest IP it will do it all the combining for you automatically.

Go to File>Automatic Image Set Processing. dialogue box opens

Click on the Light Frames Tab>Select light frames> navigate to directory with the light frames and select only the Light files and not the *thm files as well. You may need to put the dialogue view into "list" or "Detail" view from the view menu.

Do the same thing for the Dark Frames tab and the Flats Tab.

Then go back to the Process tab and click "Process"

Once the processing is finished click on the "Align TSR" button and another dialogue opens. click "Input" and then "combine"

This will combine all your shots. Then click "display combination" by looking at this you can see if your images need to be just translocated to align them or if they need to be rotated as well. Close the image and click done on the "combine" dialogue.

Assuming they just need translating. Click on the Centroid button, make sure the "translate only" button is checked and click on "Common Point or Star" bullet

Hold down your shift key and left mouse click on a star near the middle. Do that to the same star on each image as it comes up. When the red box appears stop.

Then click "align". When this is finished click on the "aligned" button at the bottom. The "combine" dialogue will come up. Go to the Combine Method tab and select Adapted Average. Go back to the "file controll" tab and select "combine". When it's finished click "display combination" This image is automatically saved as a fits file. click done and done on the combine dialogue box and the align dialogue box.

Go to colour in the top menu and select "brighness, levels and curves" > "Digital development" near the bottom. selec Auto and then Apply. Muck around with the sliders until your happy.

Now I haven't really re-read this so I've probably missed something, but give it a go and see what happens

I can get all the files up, and process them that's not the problem, it's when i get to putting a box around the star for alignment that it all falls apart.
and when i do somehow manage that the image comes out with heaps of trails.
i haven't had it long so i'll keep working on it, hopefully it will fall into place.

the fellow that talks on the tutorial videos, clicks all over the place and i have some trouble in following him, as i'm sure he thinks we know what he is talking about.

Had a go in Registax, maybe this is a better image, but that to told me that 8 out of the 10 images were to large, so it stacked only two.

Yea i dont mind it either, but i still have a long way to go, still a bit of a novice at this stuff, but it's fun.
Tonight i hope to capture Orion again, but a little higher in the Sky, we will see how we go.
