Lagoon Nebula - 3D Stereo (Cross Vision)

My last decent imaging session was 4 months ago so it's been quite a dry astro run of late. I shouldn't complain about the clouds too much though, it is starting to look nice and green again in the paddocks.

In the absence of new images I've been working on my backlog of data. Unfortunately most of my older work was shot at higher ISO's, however I've finally got this one to a stage that I'm happy with. Despite my best efforts to get more pink in the image I couldn't make it work. Still, given that it's an un-modded Canon I'm pretty happy with the result. Hopefully it can begin to resemble what the Lagoon might look like from a nearby spaceship. I suppose the blue in my image adds support to the water/lagoon effect, haha

The 3D processing took a little longer on this one, mainly due to the larger volume of stars. Last week I found a 3D lenticular postcard at the newsagent which really impressed me so I'm hoping I can translate my work directly into print. More research needed however it'd certainly save me from going cross-eyed!

DETAILS:
SCT 1260mm F/6.3 (guided)
10 x 60sec, ISO 6400
March 2015

CROSS VISION INSTRUCTIONS:
In cross eye freeviewing the image for the left eye is on the right and the image for the right eye is on the left. You stare at a point about 1/2 way to the screen so that your eye's gaze is crossing at the half way point.
As you cross your eyes the image will go double. When your eyes are crossed the correct amount, the middle images will overlap and be in 3D. The two outer images may remain in your peripheral vision and will be in 2D.

Thanks for looking
Cheers, Evan.

Hi Dylan, the resolution in your lagoon is incredible! Particularly around the edges of the nebula. Great work! When I go back and look at mine I'm reminded of how "soft" it looks - probably as a result of the ISO 6400 sadly.

Your 3D effect is great If you do another one, maybe try skewing some of the stars to bring them out of the screen towards the viewer as well. I've noticed in my processing that it's this final step that's seems to give that full 3D effect to the image.

Cheers

Very nice Lagoon Evan I'm not a big fan of eye-crossing, but I like colours and detail in your image.

Have you seen Dr Brian May's website for the "London Stereoscopic Company" and his stereo "Owl" viewers?

http://www.londonstereo.com/

One way to stop going cross eyed

I can also recommend Google Cardboard viewers .. though that OWL link looks like it has a bit more distance between the eyes and the art which is nice

Yes I agree Even, thanks for the tip! I really should do another one especially on these cloudy nights!

Thanks Roger, I wasn't aware of that. I'd only ever seen children's versions of stereo viewers
