They can certainly be used for astronomical use - and do a great job of it - but as always, aperture rules and you may not get the best bang for your buck with only 42 mm.

Never fear. The exit pupil is what matters. These have 5mm, which is just about ideal under fairly good, but less-than-perfect skies. Same as 10x50s but a
little less magnification (read: easier to hold steady). I'm sure they do an excellent job when pointed at the sky
