Aurora Viewing in Tasmania

The SWMBO and I are heading to Tassie the week after Snake Valley for some dance stuff (judging and workshops) and i am hoping to get to a site that it may be possible to catch any Aurora if they are happening.

Any hints as to accessible areas not too far from Hobart where it may be a chance to catch an image?

Cheers

Malcolm

Malcolm,
There are some good easy to access southern facing spots within easy reach just south of Hobart that are frequented by the local aurora chasers. Tinderbox Beach, Howden boat ramp forshore and Trial Bay are all within 30 minutes of central Hobart. For elevated spots consider Mt Nelsom Signal Station (not sure if you would see faint aurora from there as there may be too much local city light) or Mt Wellington right on Hobart's doorstep.

Cheers

Steve

Good luck Malcolm, it was one of the reasons I moved down here, and have some seen some beautiful displays.
They are predicting some good aurora early next week, but fingers crossed for the weekend too.
I live in the SE, but Steve has given you some great sites.
Good luck

I snaggled this graph from Dave Headland at the Aurora Australis page.
