Horse Head Nebula - 3D Stereo (Cross Vision)

When I was a child I visited Siding Spring Observatory and saw an image of the Horse Head Nebula in their gallery. I've dreamt of capturing that nebula for myself ever since.

On the 19 September, the stars aligned! (no pun intended ). I managed to squeeze a single 15min sub from my LX200 with perfect guiding. That's never happended before! Sadly, in my excitement, I got carried away and turned my telescope towards some other DSO's before the dew set in. I'm absolutely stoked with how it turned out though. Yes it's been overcooked... but who cares when you're this happy!

DETAILS:
1260mm F/6.3 (guided)
1 x 15min, ISO 800
19 Sept 2015

CROSS VISION INSTRUCTIONS:
In cross eye freeviewing the image for the left eye is on the right and the image for the right eye is on the left. You stare at a point about 1/2 way to the screen so that your eye's gaze is crossing at the half way point.
As you cross your eyes the image will go double. When your eyes are crossed the correct amount, the middle images will overlap and be in 3D. The two outer images may remain in your peripheral vision and will be in 2D.

Thanks for looking
Cheers, Evan.

Are there any 'tutes' on how to do this Even, & can it be done with PS CS3, or does one need the latest ?

Thanks mate, this one is probably my favourite at the moment, probably more so because I've wanted this image for years! haha.

Tute - sure! See attached PDF below. It's a workflow I recently stitched together for another IIS member. Happy to share

Yep, you can use PS CS3, you don't need the latest version.
Cheers, Evan

Thanks Adrian , I was a bit unsure of my DSO framing at first, but in the end it allowed for a good number of stars (in relation to the nebula) and that helped support the 3D effect.

I've noticed that when the image is viewed in 3D, the details in the HorseHead appear slightly finer, almost as if I'm getting improved resolution. Could just be a trick of the eyes, but seems to work

Cheers, Evan

You wouldn't by any chance be able to say take a Hubble image of say M83 and apply this affect to it to make it 3D could you?

Hi Adrian, sure - happy to try. I'll grab a decent Hubble/ESO image of M83 and apply the effect. I'd also thought about trying it on the Tarantula Nebula at some point, so I might do it at the same time. Of the few quick samples I conducted when learning - the better the resolution, the better the final 3D effect

I'll upload the samples next week in the beginners section.

Cheers, Evan
