Object Sizes VS Scope FOV

Hey Guys,

I made a post a few weeks ago asking for equipment recommendations. I'm getting closer to deciding on what to get. In order to do so I've been looking into what focal length would be suitable for what I want to do. It's a little confusing and I need to do a bit more research. I was originally going for planetary imagine, but have since decided that deep space will be preferred.

I'm struggling to get my head around the size of the objects, and what telescope will be suitable for these objects.

Is there a list of objects, their sizes and what FOV is requied? Or is this something people tend to figure out on their own easy enough?

If I take m42 as an example, the app I use says the size 65' (is this 1.08 degrees?). So how do I figure out what set up to use as far as scope selection, using prime focus, barlow, eye piece etc?

I was thinking of using something along the lines of this:

http://www.bintel.com.au/Telescopes/...oductview.aspx

with an heq5 pro.

Would this be suitable? I was thinking a cassegrain might be better, but they are expensive and their focal length is perhaps too long?

Sorry to bombard you all with such questions. Thanks in advance,

Andy

Install CCDCalc (see here: http://www.newastro.com/book_new/camera_app.html)

This program will allow you simulate the FOV of different telescope and camera combinations. You can then scroll through the list of deep sky objects to see how the FOV of your telescope/camera combo compares.
