Picked this lens up on Eb.. for a good price about $100 AUS. It is a C mount Canon 17 to 102 mm zoom F2. This lens is for 16mm film so the quality is very good for a zoom. Works very nicely as a finder with the GstarEX. Two pics showing M8 (center) at 17mm and 102mm. This is what is seen on the screen in real time. I am going to try a UV/IR or LPR filter next as I think IR and light pollution is washing out contrast. Makes life a lot easier finding dim objects without dark adaptation.
Very nice setup. It'd be nice to have that electronic finderscope capability too, with the little LCD right there. Although I guess I'd be using it on a computer so would be better off with a webcam instead, but still it's a nice idea.
Excellent idea for equatorials - may save having to rotate an OTA as often! There's more nebulosity in your finder M8 shot than my astrophot from 10*1 minute shots
