Talking Kerbal Space Program

I know there are a few other KSP players on IIS so I thought it was time we had a thread to chat about our favorite ships, challenges, mods, anomolies, successes, and of course failures.

I've been playing since version 0.11, before there was even a Mun let alone the rest of the system to explore, and it's been a really different experience to most games where the game is basically complete when you buy it.

To start things off a few of my favorite things:

- I can't live without Kerbal Engineer, if you play this game and don't use this mod... well I don't know but it must be really hard!

- My hardest challenge was probably landing Jeb on Eve and returning him safely home. The mission wasn't too hard once everything was built but designing and constructing a ship capable of the mission was pretty hard with lots of testing. Also one of the biggest rockets I've built in KSP.
(gallery of this mission here)

- Favorite, most fun to play, mission was probably a Mun landing mission Apollo 11 style complete with having to separate the CSM from the 3rd stage then spin around, dock with, and pull the lander out of the shroud. Then a standard Apollo style Lunar (Munar?) Orbit Rendevous between the lander ascent stage and the orbiting CSM. Relatively easy but very fun - pics attached

P.S. if you have no idea what KSP is, it's a game where you build rockets, planes, and various other craft from modular parts. It has 'real' physics and orbital mechanics though at a smaller scale. It's kind of like a fun, kids version of Orbiter, though that doesn't really do it justice. Have a skip through this vid to get a basic idea (not my vid and I think first time players but you get the idea):

Yeah, I am a KSP nut too.

I don't do missions - I prefer making whacky things and making them work. The new flight dynamics to the latest update makes it quite realistic and the aircraft are more flyable.

My favourite thing to do is skimming - hitting the atmosphere at an alarming rate and keeping it in the skim, then creating a stable symettrical orbit. Or the other favourite is making hypersonic craft, vertically. If Idon't get the shock clouds and vortices before 800m I have failed (just use a probe with either the small solid propellant pack or multiple of the tiny solid tubes - light and fast)

Such an enjoyable, simple game. I often like landing an aircraft or pod somewhere odd and getting Jebediah out for a walk...

greatest game ever. Then you mod it with the real solar system mods and my god is it great and hard.

That's what's so great about it Lewis is you can do whatever you want, set your own challenges or just build stuff to watch it explode (especially in 0.25 where they've improved the explosion graphics )
I haven't played much with building aircraft but I did have a bash a few weeks ago at building a rocketplane to do X15 style flights. Fun!

I haven't tried the real Solar system mods Steve, which ones do you use?
And do they tweak the rocket scales too or just the system?

If KSP is too easy for you and you crave realism, you should check out Orbiter.
If you want a challenge do a complete Apollo 11 mission with NASSP where you have to learn all the button layouts for the LM and CSM and even have to learn a lot of the codes for the Apollo Guidance Computer. There's a couple of weeks of my life I'm not getting back...
