Galaxy Optics 18" Mirror & Accessories: Offers >$3,500.00

Galaxy Optics 18" f5.5 primary mirror, SN0411, together with Galaxy Optics 3.1" secondary mirror and 3.5" secondary mirror to allow optimisation for visual or photographic use and 3.1” and 3.5” secondary mirror holders to suit both secondaries.

At time of purchase the mirror was rated at 1/25 wave though will obviously be limited below this by local seeing conditions. Originally purchased new in 1993 the coating is in almost pristine condition with only very minor marks conducive with careful use in a Newtonian configuration.

Last used on a Dobsonian mount but has also been mounted on a split ring (aka horse shoe mount similar to designs used by the Hale 200” and AAO at Siding Springs) for an extremely stable photographic platform.

I am selling these premium optics as I have bought a new house which sits on the side of a mountain and has no facility for an observatory. My focus is now moving towards a more portable AP set up for road trips around Australia in my retirement. I intend to put the proceeds towards a quality EQ mount and will happily discuss trades towards same.

I did the following calculations based on new prices via email from John Hudek at Galaxy Optics dated 30.1.15:

18” f4.2 Primary $3,395
3.1” Secondary 259
3.5” Secondary 379
Shipping & Insurance 760

Total $4,793 USD

Add conversion to $AUD, customs valuation, import charges and GST and the total for the optics alone is: $6,807.78. Wait time 10-14 months.

I am looking for best offers above $3,500.00. Delivery costs at buyer's expense, however I may be prepared to travel to meet half way.

This is a premium optic and will suit a discerning buyer. Excels in planetary, galaxy and nebulae use. Has been stored un-used in original shipping box for the last 5 years and lovingly checked every 14 days to ensure no degradation of optical coating. Inspections more than welcome.

HI Les ,
In your preamble youo said that the 18” was a f4.2 focal length however the engraved data says that it's an F5.5. Can you please clarify ?? Cheers Zub

Hi mate.

I think if you look closely under Point 1, I do say it's f5.5 and the picture backs that up.

In the price comparison of a similar new mirror from Galaxy Optics I used their current configuration of f4.2 as that is the only 18" they currently produce.

I hope that clarifies it

Cheers

Les
