Does anybody do telescope hire in Melbourne, do you know?

Best bet is join the ASV (see
http://asv.org.au/) and get one of their loan scopes. Not sure what the wait list is like but it costs $60 of which $50 is refunded on return of the scope after 3 months. They are an 8" dob. Also once a member you have access to the dark sky site at Heathcote so you get to use it under really dark skies.
