Vela from Snake Valley

Had a ball with all the friendly folk at Snake Valley on the weekend, even better we were blessed with clear skies for both Friday and Saturday nights, I hear we were very lucky for a party based in Ballarat!

Here's my first project from the visit, being a key area in the Vela Supernova region. 15 shots of 6 mins each in 6nm Ha, and 15 shots of 2 mins each RGB, with the same old Sony A7s camera and scope setup.

Maybe I've discovered a new SNR Rick! It's a huge area Vela, one could hunt for stuff for months.

That's one of the Gum Nebulas, perhaps Gum 14 which is next to the Vela SNR.

You can see it on the left hand side of my mosaic:

Thanks for that Greg, great mosaic by the way. I'll keep hunting around...for the rest of my life!

Nice image Simon!

Your image centres roughly on RA 8h 58m DEC -48 10 which is about 6 degrees further south than Gum 14. You just missed the pencil nebula at the bottom.
Vela has a lot of clusters and nebulosity - I've tried a few of these but I don't take long enough exposures to match the quality of your image.

Tony.

Nice gum nebula this one. Lots of interesting detail but alas not the Vela SNR.

I like the colours and detail level. Quite smooth too. Well done.

Gee thanks chaps. Yes, the rather cold nights at Ballarat ever so slightly helped the noise levels in the Sony, (slightly!!)

Actually the noise was still quite noticeable, but I'm learning to use Pixinsight's ACDNR noise function subtly and more importantly, lightroom seems to spectacularly love the even noise pattern of the Sony.

Rick S taught me that 40 subs can produce a really nice smooth image, so stay tuned for my smoothest image yet, I'm rather pleased with it, just finishing touches to it now. I've previously thought that 20 was the sweet spot, but bugger me, 40 is definitely an improvement.
