How I focus my DSLR on a SCT

Hi Guys,

I wanted to share my basic focus and set up routine with you all.
Before I start this is simply my method that works for me...I am not going to go into all the different programs used for focusing just my steps I use every night for imaging.

1) As soon as the sun goes down I fit the SCT cooler and run it for atleast 10-20 minutes depending how warm the day is.....as shown in pic below...this will cool the primary mirror down to ambient...if this is not done focus will more then likely move out within the first 2 hours of imaging...you will see your stars have become larger as the mirror cools.

2) I then select a bright star and do a visual focus through the Camera....at this stage I only focus using the SCT focus knob...once focused visualy I lock the mirror using the Meade SCT Mirror lock.

3) from now on all my focusing is done by the Williams Optic 2 speed manual focuser....I slightly defocus the star with he williams focuser so I know which way to start adjusting focus using programs like DSLR Focus and Images plus in their new version 2.8

4) Once I have achieved focus I then lock the williams focuser so it does not move over the period of the night.....Some say you need to refocus as the night goes on and as the weather warms up this may be needed...I find using the cooler make's a huge difference keeping the SCT focused over the period of the night and in conjunction with the mirror lock and williams optic focsuuer lock focus stay spot on for many hours of imaging.

5) Take your time with focusing as it's the single most important function you need to do to produce nice images....1 out of focus image will spoil your final stacked image......how you ultimately keep your scope focused over the night will result in sharper more defined images.

This whole routine takes about 5 minutes and if I dont change my camera position...the next night focusing routine starts at number 3 on the list by passing any focus adjustmant via the SCT.

Below is some images of the SCT cooler, Williams optic 2 speed focuser and the camera I am currently using.

I know this is just a basic procedure but hopefully I can point people in the right direction where they can make the own process that will work for them.

Tony

It's not what you call a routine....works like DSLR Focus..I have 2.8 and have been playing with it.....DSLR focus is better for focusing giving you more information but IP works well in itself.

Dont be mean...say sorry to the 350D....it's been worked on most its life so have some respect for the camera Gary....lol

Well written there, Tony, good advice for those starting out.

Got to agree, that's one ugly 350D. Works well though.

Cheers
