Cheap Memory Cards

I am running my Nikon 3100 as my Astrophotography camera. Kogan have 32gb cards for $17, i purchased three. Given there are only a handful of manufacturers of cards on our bit of dirt do you need to buy brand names? Is there a difference? It would have been smarter to ask before I shelled out coin (my son assured me it didn't matter) does it matter? Is the any need to purchase the branded product?

It can matter, it's just a matter of luck. Of the many cards I have bought,
three were almost useless. They were supposedly 10 rated, good for video use. They were fine for stills, but could not handle video at all.

You can trust Kogan having legit cards, and cards from places like Officeworks. But if you buy cheaper cards from Ebay, you run a big risk of buying fake cards that don't perform in accordance with their class rating, and which can suddenly fail with very little use.

Renato1 & Raymo,

Over the next couple of days I am going to attempt some images of Jupiter with the afore mentioned cards. They will be my first ever Astrophotography attempts so please excuse me if the images are dreadful. I can assure you I won't be running the images through Registacks as I don't know how to use Registacks. The images will be as raw as raw can be.

I don't want to deter you, but single shots of the planets are rarely
very good. You need to shoot at least a 1000 frames, and stack in Registax. It's free, and not too difficult to learn to use. I imagine that
there are tutorials on youtube.

Having bought various types of memory over the past 25 years or so I can attest that you do get what you pay for, in respect to both mean time to failure and performance. Kingston is one brand that I would recommend if you want something reliable that won't break the bank.

Here's my 1mb worth.
I have a generic 32Gb class 10 and a 32 and a 8Gb brand name ones that I use in my Canon dSLR. None have faulted and all take the same time to write to the card. However a 32Gb generic did die on me last year that I had been using in my Galaxy Note phone..

mean time to failure
may be indicated by the failure of the older 32Gb generic, but it may also have been just a badly made number.
If you have doubts go with Brand name, and Kingston has always had a good reputation.
I use the generic 32 as my primary card. So far I am happy. Well, at least until the 600mb/sec cards come down into my budget range :-)
