December 28, 2014: In transit
After a sleep, a few movies and the amazing service from the world’s #1 international airline, we will arrive in Dubai for a few hours stopover. There is plenty of exploring to do in Dubai airport, so the time will pass very quickly. We will then jump on EK725 to Dar Es Salaam International Airport. A short transit here before we jump on our final flight, PW436 to Kilimanjaro Airport and finally reach our home away from home - Springlands Hotel. It’s a long way to go... but it will definitely be worth it!
December 29, 2014: Kilimanjaro awaits
Today is all about physically and mentally preparing for the mighty mountain. If you are up early, take a walk out the front of the hotel to get a sense of what lies ahead. Today we will be answering questions, ensuring everyone has the correct gear, arranging storage for things you don’t need on the mountain, and receiving a detailed briefing from our expert Kilimanjaro leaders to ensure you have the best chance of standing on the ‘roof of Africa’. An early night is essential!
December 30, 2014 - January 4, 2015:
Conquering Kili: Marangu route (6 days)
After a hearty breakfast, we board the buses and drive out to the Machame park gates, at the base of Mt. Kilimanjaro. Here, we sign in and go through the orientation process before starting our trek. The next six days are likely to be some of the most challenging and rewarding you have ever experienced - ascending through forest, moorland and alpine desert before reaching Kibo Hut - where we prepare our overnight attempt to reach the snow capped Uhuru Peak - 5895m AMSL. Our Zara Tours guides are some of the most qualified and experienced on the mountain - they will make sure everyone is safe and comfortable, and give you the best chance of reaching the top. What a way to celebrate the new year!
January 5, 2015: A well-earned rest
Wash some clothes, relax by the pool, get a massage or take a stroll into town. Share stories of the extraordinary challenge we have just returned from. Today is all about reflection, rest and relaxation!
January 6 - 7, 2015: An African wildlife safari
Lake Manyara and Ngorongoro Crater
Today we begin our African wildlife safari. After an early breakfast we will jump in our safari style 4WD’s and enjoy a few hours drive out to Lake Manyara National park. You will pass through the city of Arusha, and many smaller villages and towns, giving you an insight into the local way of life. Once we arrive at the park, its time to pop up the roof and take our first game drive. Lake Manyara is famous for it’s elephants, baboons, hippo pools and the elusive tree-climbing lions! After a night at the luxurious Highview Hotel, we will head out to the Ngorongoro crater where you will find one of the greatest concentrations of African wildlife on the planet. After lunch we will say goodbye to lion-king country and head back to Moshi, to begin the next major component of our journey.

January 8, 2015: Our cultural immersion begins
Teaching project in Moshi Primary Schools and orphanage visit.
It’s time to go back to school! We begin with a quick Swahili lesson from the Principals of the local primary schools, before you have the opportunity to teach your very own classes. Games, singing, dancing and arts and crafts are amongst the many options that the Tanzanian kids love. In the afternoon, we will visit one of the local orphanages for an eye opening and heart warming experience with the ‘kili kids’.
January 9, 2015: Coaching project and Sports Carnival in Moshi Primary Schools
Today is all about preparing your students to compete in our annual sports carnival. This event has become one of the hottest on the local school calendars and is fiercely competed. Work with your teams and help them find the edge, that will ensure they lift the trophy in 2014!
January 10, 2015: The day of service at Moshi Primary Schools and home-stay experience
It’s time to give something back to these wonderful schools. Today we will be giving a few of the classrooms a fresh coat of paint and finding any other way we can to lend a hand. After our day of service, in small groups, you will be welcomed into the home of a local teacher for an unforgettable, authentic home-stay experience. Share stories, learn each others way of life and form a bond with a family on the other side of the world.
January 11, 2015: Explore Moshi and celebration dinner
Today, you are in control. After spending the morning with your home-stay hosts, you have your final opportunity to explore Moshi town before heading back to the hotel for an afternoon by the pool. Tonight we have arranged for a special dinner with the local people that we have shared this experience with - a night to remember!
January 12 - 13, 2015: The School of St Jude
“Fighting poverty through education”
This morning we will be picked up by the St Jude’s school buses, and transferred to school. As visitors to the school, you will be given an intimate insight into the extraordinary story that Gemma has created, with over 1500 of Tanzania’s poorest and brightest young people who receive a first class education. The highlights are undoubtably the home visits and yLead House. These two days will inspire you, enlighten you, and make you realise the capacity one person has to change the world around them!
January 14 - 17, 2015: Magical Zanzibar - a tropical island escape.
This morning we catch Precision Air flight PW421 from Kilimanjaro to Zanzibar. Here we meet our friends from Sun Tours who will transfer us to the beautiful Tembo Hotel - right on the water in bustling Stone Town. The next few days will include plenty of free time to enjoy in the sun, on the beach or picking up souvenirs in the local markets. Also included is a historical Stone Town tour, a trip to the fruit and spice farms and a beautiful sunset dinner at one of the best restaurants on the island. A magical way to end our journey together.
January 17 - 19, 2015: Kwahere Tanzania! (Goodbye)
This morning we have our final breakfast in Zanzibar before heading to the airport from a quick 20minute flight on PW421 to Dar Es Salaam. After a short wait, we will check in to our return Emirates flight EK726 to Dubai. Only a short stopover here before the final leg home.
January 19, 2015: Welcome Home!
EK432 arrives in Brisbane at 1am on January 19. From here, those traveling interstate can opt to take an early flight home, or have a few hours rest in an airport hotel. The journey may be over, but the memories and friendships will last a lifetime!
