Another Aristarchus

Managed to get a little lunar imaging in tonight. Had plans to do a large mosaic, but suffered some gremlins unfortunately.

Even though the seeing conditions were pretty poor (jetstream!

) I managed to salvage this aristarchus. I'm very pleased with it given the circumstances!

TouCam, C8, 2.5x Powermate,K3,UV/IR and No 21 filters, monochrome.

1200frames, stacked the best 100, light to moderate bathtub wavelets, in Registax. Saved for web in PS CS2.

Hi Al

That is an excellent image of quite a difficult area to capture, due to the immense variations in brightness in this very interesting lunar region. You seem to have controlled these very well as I can see heaps of detail in Aristarchus, yet you’ve also managed to retain nice tones and detail in the darker parts of the plateau. Great job.

Did you use layer masking to control the blowouts in highlights while processing?

A fine image of a fine area of the moon.

Mike, no I haven't used layer masking. I haven't learned how to do that yet

. Same with MAP processing.

I tend to keep the white meter in K3 a bit low when capturing Aristarchus. I play about with levels between 150 and 200. Gamma was at 0. I'll have to check all the avi's I took last night because I took a few of Aristarchus and experimented a bit with levels including one run on autoexposure (I expect it to burn out Aristarchus).

Other than that all I did to this one was I think drop gamma to 0.8 in Registax. I played with the histo stretch but cancelled it. Did no processing in PS, just saved for web.

This was the first time I've tried a UV/IR blocking filter. I haven't had one till now. I couldn't get the brightness down with just the UV/IR so I had to add another filter to dim it a bit, so I thought I'd try a #21 Orange this time instead of the moon filter. From what I've read orange is supposed to "greatly enhance lunar features"
