Wide field Lovejoy, EDIT now with Pleiades

G'day

Here is my attempt at capturing Lovejoy before it disappears north, also with some dust in the region. I was surprised at how long the tail is, for comparison the FOV is 10x15 degrees.

32x 5 minute subs with my trusty old 350D and 85mm lens.

Check out larger size Here.

Thanks for looking,

Cheers
Jo

Awesome shot Jo! The old 350D is still working strong.

Great shot Jo! Sure is a long tail.
It's heading too far North for us Southerners soon.

Tony.

Amazing. That is a very beautiful image. How did you stack the images from over 2.7 hours? One aligned on the comet and one aligned on the stars and then layer them in?

Greg.

Thanks Kevin, now that I've got the cooler working it has surprised me.

Yeah only a few days left for me also, it's been good though the brightest comet so far I have seen.

Thanks a lot Greg, really glad you liked it.

Re stacking, I never seem to have any success with trying to remove trailed stars out of my images so for this one I used the 'Heal' function in StarTools to remove the stars from 10 subs before stacking. This resulted in a nice starless comet image that I layered on the background.

It took a fair while, but I guess all comet pics do.

Cheers
Jo

I had an idea of seeing if my comet pic field overlapped with a Pleiades shot I did a few weeks ago and it happens that it does, I'm stoked!

Larger size Here.
