Astronomical Heritage

Attended an interesting lecture last night at Auckland Astronomical Society by Clive Ruggles about archeoastronomy.
UNESCO and IAU teamed up in 2008 to create and recognise a number of archeo astronomy sites and themes under the UNESCO Science portfolio, a somewhat under represented feild.
Main thrust of the presentation was how difficult it was to validate much of the material that was presented. Some accepted concepts proved to be quite unconnected and others were not apparent till a lot of research supported the possibilty. Many more modern sites were obvious but older material a lot less.
The highest confirmed category of the 4 he had was 'Generally Agreed'. The others went from a straight 'Refuted' (and some previously accepted sites were in there ) to degrees in between.

Link to the UNESCO\IAU site for it all here

We were supposed to get some telescope time on the 20" SC after but clouds got in the way.
