EQ6Pro Reticle aligning

Gday All

I know its not required, ( as i can manually set my reticle by simply using LST + 12 ), but has anyone ever used the instructions in the book to properly align the reticle/"Index marker ring", and then used the method in the book to set the head?
I find the instructions for setting the reticle index to be rather strange and verbose, and when using the setup generated from it, i never get the right position of the head.
To make it simpler for testing the method, i picked an LST which placed Sig Oct almost directly above the pole on the meridien,
ie the "top" edge of the asterism is horizontal.
ie Melb 9 Nov 2014 at 7PM, the asterism is above the pole,
so the reticle view should appear 180 deg out of phase, ie at the bottom of the polar scope.
I get nothing like that. I keep getting it at about 2 o'clock vs the expected 6 o'clock.
