IC2118 Widefield from Bretti

Hi all,

I've finally had some time to sit down and start processing my data from my week away up at Bretti and Wiruna.

Here is IC2118 better known as The Witch Head Nebula in Eridanus which was shot at Bretti on the early morning of the 24th September.

This is 3 hours worth of 3 minute exposures. Shot using my Canon 6D and Canon 70-200mm f/4L IS lens at ISO3200 with the lens stopped down to f/5.6. Pretty happy with the amount of dust I was able to pull out of this one. I was also surprised to see so many tiny background galaxies in the 100% res version. Some fog came in towards the end of the session, hence the glow around Rigel. I was going to remove those frames but I kind of like the effect.

Nice wide view of the Witch Head, Jason. Well done! There's a lot of cute little galaxies in the FOV but you're probably just a bit too wide to tease them out.

Thanks Rick. Yes there are loads of little galaxies in the FOV but yes at 100% they are nothing more than fuzzy blobs. I might post some of the more obvious ones as there are some interesting looking clusters.

Cheers Cam for the kind words. I kept my eye on Rigel as I was processing the image with some star masks and the minimum filter. Both techniques helped.
