Grus quartet dslr

Hi all,

Just a couple hours worth of data on the Grus Quartet region from Monday night.

Some tilt top left probably from the OAG i'm guessing

Any tips appreciated. I have brought my sub length back down to 3mins to hopefully improve the SNR.

Hi res below:

Feels good to be producing some images finally. Will need to get a cooled camera before the weather heats up.

Clear skies

Very nice Russell. I was hoping to get the "G4" this winter but got distracted by other things. Maybe next year...

Hi, Russell,

A shot to be proud of. If you want to improve the SNR, go for the longest subs you possibly can within the limitations of everything else. Push on till differential flexure (with OAG you can go a long time) or field rotation are starting to be limiting, or until you're starting to burn out or the background is getting too bright. Reason: every sub has one dose of readout noise. Ten short subs have ten doses of readout noise. One long sub has only one dose. Once again, a great shot.

Best,
Mike

Looking great!

As far as that corner, I'd say the spacing might just be a hair off as 3 of the corners show a little bit of the star stretching, its just more pronounced in the top left. I had the same problem when I put my DSLR on if the spacing wasn't quite perfect. One other minor note is that the flats looks like they didn't quite compensate for a few dust motes. That's just nitpicking and I only saw that on the full-sized one on flickr though.

As I said, that is just nitpicking and the quartet look fantastic and it's definitely one to be proud of!

You've been busy Kevin! It's still a good time to shoot the 'G4' - if the weather clears up!

Thanks for the kind words mike - the back ground is the problem where I am, I should get a LP filter (or a new mono camera).

Hi Anna, you are probably right re: the spacing, I had to modify the MPCC to fit with the OAG - its pretty tight with spacing. The oag stalk probably added a bit to the issue. Unfortunately, no flats with this image - my computer decided to undertake a 45 minute update during twilight Thanks for the comments

Cheers Simmo - I think you were talking to me or it could've been confirming Ross' comments

I had a bit more of a play last night with photoshop, I attempted to fix the tilt and boost the colour. As its on the laptop i'm not sure exactly how it turns out, till I get to a work monitor (now). Tilt/coma a bit better in the top but perhaps introduced some curve to the bottom, then colour vibrancy I think is now just too far, perhaps somewhere half way between the original and this version is where I should aim for.

Nice work Russell!

As you say a little noisy but not enough to distract from the galaxies.
What temp was it when you imaged.?

Cheers,

Justin.

Sorry missed this one Justin - thanks!

the sensor ranged from 24-29 degrees with most @ ~27degs. I can't recall the ambient temp now but probably around 10 degrees, it was high enough to not worry about dew.

Cheers

Nice work, Russell! Minor nit but I think your colour boost may have introduced or exacerbated a slight colour cast in the background?

Cheers,
Rick.

Thanks Rick - exacerbated I think... actually looking at my original I can see some strong horizontal tram track banding passing through the middle galaxy. I can't stop looking at it now ... I might have another reprocess tonight.
