Dew Shields come Light Baffles for 20 x 80 Triplet Binoculars

Just made these today, and gave them the first light test tonight under extremely intrusive streetlight conditions.

I must say I've very impressed in terms of improvement to controlling stray light into the 'nocs. I can view about 30 degrees closer to a street light before the flare and glare from the light wash out the view.

I have sent a DIY article to Mike for the site, so watch this space (so to speak).

Al.

They look very long. Did you check for any vignetting of the edge of field?

G'Day Starkler,

Yes, they are deliberately long. I have to admit I didn't consider vignetting when I made them, but last night's testing did not reveal any vignetting.

Since you mentioned it, I did some calcs. The FOV is 4 degrees, the shields extend 200mm in front of the objective lens. By my calcs the clearance between the visual light cone and the inside of the shield is 4.75mm. So theoretically the should be no vignetting. Whew!

Just hold them up to the light and look into the ep from different angles and see if you can see the extensions intruding from the side.

Did your calcs include the light cone being 4 degrees off axis?

Yep. Actually 2 degree each side of axis, and yes I have done the visual test - not visible through the EPs at all.

Cool Al,

They look like mailing tubes. That's what I use on my GS finderscope. A perfect fit.

Might have to try it on my 20x80T's. I don't have a stray light problem but I'll see if it improves contrast even more.

HOughy,

the details are in the article I've sent to Mike. All up it cost me $14.40 for the PVC pipe (enough to make 2 sets ) and $8.60 for a can of flat black spray paint (not sure how many sets that'll do ). I already had the adhesive velcro strip.

I did think about mailing tubes after I bought the PVC pipe, so that's as far as that idea got! If it's the right size it'll work, but I'm happy with the PVC - they are definitely robust and dew proof! ... and they look the part .

I haven't decided what to do with the spare PVC pipe yet. I don't have a use for it, but mailing it to someone else to use is probably more expensive than buying some.

Photos

Here ya go HOughy... photos!

Just ducked out into the hallowed shed... ahem... studio to take these for you. At the risk of doubling up I might include the odd photo from the article as well.

Your challenge, HOughy, should you choose to accept it, is to have a set made by the time Mike gets the article up on the site. There should be enough info in these photos to make 'em.

Al.

Mate... nothing like flash photography of matt black surfaces to show up marks and paw prints!

I bought the from AOE. In the abscence of any information about where AOE sources them, I'd say AOE!
