Theft From A Parcel.

Something strange happened to me. I won two second hand arrow rests for my bows on Ebay for $49. The seller in Queensland makes a parcel in an envelope, goes to the Post Office who weighs it, charges him $7.20 and makes a white sticker for that amount which they place on the envelope.

My wife goes to our locked mail box, which has a spring loaded flap that closes after the mail is inserted. Collects the folded up mail from the secure mail box, which includes two other small parcels in envelopes, and brings them in. And what I find when I go through the mail is a big envelope from Queensland, with the side cut open and nothing in it.

To my mind, on the balance of probability, the theft took place in transit.

I've complained to Australia Post, but I suspect I'll have to lodge a claim against the seller who didn't use registered mail.

I also suspect that whoever stole the arrow rests was stealing at random, as most people don't own compound bows.

I think people selling on the classifieds here may be wise to always pay the extra $2.30 or so for registered mail.
Regards,
Renato

Sad news mate, you win some and you lose some, and I think this may be a definite loss.
I was about to get a bow before the legsgave out and have promised myself one when I can walk to the target and back assuming I get back close to full mobility.
It is a curious theft indeed.

That is sad news.

paying the extra $2.30 registration is a good thing to do.But I wonder would it have prevented this episode? hopefully it would have.

Its a real concern to read something like this, most of us here get lots of parcels.Reading your post, sounds like the item was in envelope, and a opportunistic theft, maybe a solid cardboard carton parcel might stand better chances from opportunistic theft.

Hope the the archery goes well in future,I have people in that field visit form time to time, one lady has an amazing recurve bow.

I had a conversation with our local postie a few weeks ago about theft from mail and he claims that 80% of thefts are at a certain southern capitol who's name starts with M
This came about when I tried to post an expensive item to a Melbourne address and he advised me to take out insurance for full value of the item because there was a very good chance it would disappear. Fortunately it didn't.

Thanks. If you do get a bow, I suggest a 30 or 35lb to 55lb compound bow. It's much easier to shoot at lower power, and the arrows can be reused over and over. I find it tough at 55lbs, and wreck an awful lot of arrows.

Yes, I suspect registration and a solid carton box would limit the opportunity - presumably registered items would narrow down the possible suspects compared to general mail.

Your friend with the recurve bow probably has a good one - the equivalent to Naglers. I've only got the inexpensive Chinese ones, equivalent to Kellners or cheap plossls.

Renato

That's interesting, suggesting a bigger problem than I thought. Though this is the first time out of around 600 or 800 parcels that it has happened to me (though a majority would have been registered).

If the item is lodged over the counter of an AP office, then the postage stamp on the receipt is your proof of registered.

Nothing will stop the theft from the package. All parcels are now tracked, and you can pay for delivery confirmation, but none of this will stop theft in the system.
