Woaw !

Heads up people ,, I just looked on Astro Pete's web site and I see they have the sweet SW ED100 for only $899 ,, that's $100 cheaper than the ED80 .

What a bargain , if you were thinking of one of these ,, now's the time .
BTW , I have no affiliation with Astr Pete's , just another amateure like you all ,

Brian.

I am also amazed that they are selling the Synguider for $249, compared with $409 from Bintel!

Great stuff for Brisbane

Pete is a legend!

But it depends on the distributor: some distributors don't allow much movement in their prices. Tasco (for Skywatcher) obviously isn't one of them.

Thanks. Never heard of Astro Pete before today.

One certainly gets a lot for the money. But I'm curious why they say it's
"Highest Practical Power - 200x "

My old 80mm ED telescope can handle 200X, surely this 100mm one should be able to handle at least 300X?
Cheers,
Renato

The rule of thumb is, "50x per inch of aperture", so 200x for a 100mm (4 inch) refractor is about right. You may be able to get more, but the advertiser is being conservative and that's a lot better than other advertisers who claim ridiculous magnifications for small refractors, notwithstanding the commonly-accepted limit of 300x due to the atmosphere. But see this:

Where does the 50x per inch limit on magnification come from?

Thanks, but 50X per inch is for reflectors. High end APO refractors - which don't have a central obstruction that pushes light out into the diffraction rings - should typically be able to do much better than that.

I can understand the advertiser being conservative, but I think it extremely unlikely a 4" APO or ED refractor won't get a lot better high power performance than a 4.5" reflector.
Cheers,
Renato
