Giro Experts

Ok, since I have a 6" Celestron newt on the way, thanks csb, I now need a decent mount and pier to put it on.

The photo below is what I want to make, however I have never seen one in person and don't really understand how the brake screws work on this type of mount??

Is it just basically a bolt that screws down onto the shaft giving resistance? If so, then it would dig in to the shaft and burr it over. Can anyone shed some light onto how this works?

I am thinking there would have to be some plastic lug under there somewhere that the bolt pushes onto the shaft.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Most of the designs I have seen use fibre pads or washers between the moving parts and tensioning device.

Hi Mark

Ambermile makes a large version of this sort of mount and I use a nylon bush on the Az lock screw since there is little need for major clamping force. In the Alt clamp though I use a brass bush because this is where solid clamping is needed the most.
