Stellarium Won't Run Via Remote Desktop

Has anyone encountered this problem ?

I purchased a second hand desktop to place at the telescope and installed my astro software on it including Stellarium. This computer is networked to my other computers. I use Remote Desktop Access to log on to this computer. If I try to run Stellarium via Remote Desktop Access it fails to run and reports that the OpenGL version supported by the graphics card is less than 1.2 which is the minimum required for Stellarium.

However If I directly log onto the computer Stellarium runs perfectly.

Both my computers graphics cards support OpenGL version 4.0

Would appreciate any ideas on how to remedy this problem

Rob

Is it possible to run the Stellarium on your local machine (no remote desktop), and get it to remote connect to the Telescope? I do that with my desktop or laptop to my mount via ethernet (normally wireless).

I will give that a go but not sure of how to do it at the moment. I use Stellarium Scope and the EQMOD ASCOM driver to connect to my AZ-EQ 6 mount from Stellarium.

Firstly I am going to download the Stellarium source and build it locally. I may be able to tweak it.

RDP doesnt use the host computers graphics card from experience. Try out a VNC app and see if that works.

Correct. I remote control my Media Server using TightVNC (http://www.tightvnc.com). It doesn't work via Remote Desktop.

Remote Desktop has always had poor OpenGL support. Basically something like OpenGL 1.0. That is not likely to ever change. Alas, most software that uses OpenGL requires better OpenGL support than that.

Thanks All.

That explains it as Stellarium requires as a minimum OpenGL 1.2

I will install VNC today.

you could also try the non open gl version of stellarium. it's in the stellarium folder.
I had to use this because my sister's pc wouldn't support eyepiece mode using open gl.

All working like a charm after I installed TightVCN server on my telescope ( media ) server and TightVCN viewer on my laptop. Additionally I have installed both hardwire and wifi connections to my telescope server.

Thanks for the advice and direction. It saved a lot of anguish and frustration.

Here is a workaround for running Stellarium via Remote Desktop Access.

1. Remotely log onto you Telescope Server using TightVCN viewer.
2. Fire up Stellarium.
3. Close your TightVCN viewer connection.
4. Remotely log onto your Telescope Server using Remote Desktop Access.

Stellarium should be running and will continue to run via Remote Desktop Access.
