12" Dob on Ebay

Hi guys,

I'm new to the game here, came across this site about a week ago and have been reading on scopes ever since. I had a small scope when I was a kid but it was total junk from Harris Scarfe.

Recently I acquired a 90mm refractor and since then I have wanted more, so I can see more.

What do you guys think of this 12" dob on ebay?

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Telescope...df318e1&_uhb=1

Is there anything I should look for when inspecting?

Thanks in advance

Hi expon,
The photo looks like a smaller dob than 12" I could be wrong but the size of the mount doesnt look right. Some people think that if the diameter f the tube measures 12 inches that it s a 12". My old 6" dob for example measured about 8" but had a 6" mirror. This looks like a 10" to me. If thats the case you can get a brand new one for $50 more at andrews communications. Even if it is a 12", brand new they are $750 at andrews. Just be aware of how BIG a solid tube 12" is. There has been countless discussions on this forum about this topic but it is HUGE!!!!!. Unless you are young and fit and have a large car that is

Thanks very much.

I had been reading about the size issues, transport isn't a worry as it would fit in my car easy but if it is going to be too hard to handle then I doubt I would want to take it anywhere. I live in Melbourne so I would need to drive a little to take full advantage of it.

If you decide to buy it make sure you use PayPal because of Buyer Protection and claim your money back within 45 days if something goes wrong. Although everybody has to start somewhere, I am always very cautious with sellers with 0 feedback.

It's definitely a 12 inch Dob and if you got it for $400 you would be happy provided the mirrors look ok. Cheers.

It looks like an early model GSO, it seems to have the GSO alt bearings and tube mounts. Can't tell from the photos if it a single or dual speed ficser but i'd guess single. The finderscope is scratched up if you enarge the photo, and that base has gaffer tape wrapped around the vertical support low down which probably means the chipboard is delaminating.

If you approach it as a reconstruction project it might be worth a bid. You'll need a new base but you can make one out of marine ply using the old pieces as tempates. More photos would help a lot, especially around the bottom. Good luck.

Thanks again guys. After thinking today it might be best just to buy new. I can get some good info from the store and be shown some tips on maintenance and use. That alone can help make up the price difference.
