Tablet instead of Laptop

What are people's opinions on the idea of using a Windows 8 Pro tablet to control a mount and camera for astrophotography? As a way to conserve battery power, using a tablet instead of a laptop would be nice if it could work.
For example, using an NEQ6 Pro mount and a Canon camera, is it possible to run PHD and Backyard EOS programs on a tablet with USB connections (possibly with microUSB with a USB adapter?). Would you be able to control these programs by touchscreen only?
