If like me you intend to hang on to your trusty old (creaky old?) copy of Windows XP, here's a newsletter with a few tips for you.

TBH there's nothing running on XP that won't run properly on Win7 these days. Win7 is robust and the interface is still inline with XP desktops with many improvements. I have a few XP legacy machines running in a VM environment and going back to XP from 7 is a bit of a pain. I also run all my astro stuff on the lappie with 7. 7 is good. 8, well it's a big jump in term of interface although I guess you'd get used to it after a while.

I still need XP to run my old accounts program and my database. Changing these to later compatible programs is not really an option due to the amount of stuff that needs to be changed. I can run them in VMware but it is a bit of a nuisance booting into this just to make small corrections to my accounts

I got round the problem with my old compiled basic utilities OK by using Qb64(gl) to recompile

Other than these I use Win 7 and Win 8 for everything else OK now. Windows 8.1 is quite acceptable running classicshell. Great improvement on that horrible screen that has two full pages of program/links that I never use

PS I have not installed any XP updates for a long time now. Still run Sp3

I still use Win XP in a limited way ...

I keep an old XP partition for games (which need 3D acceleration, and actually run faster in the ol' XP mode) and for a couple of legacy reference programs that won't run well in a virtual machine and that I don't need need to use with "data" (so not impacted by the fact that they're in a separate partiton, dual-booted). It's not internet connected - I don't trust Win XP on the 'net.

I use Linux as my main OS and also have a Win XP virtual machine (again, not internet connected) for some more legacy programs that don't need 3D and are happy with the VM environment. These get access to my data through a shared folder. It allows me to work with data using either Windows-native or Linux-native applications: the best of both worlds. Although 99% of my "work" is done in Linux, every now and again, I get a legacy document that needs an old Windows-only program.

I had these Win XP licenses and applications anyway, so this was a cost-effective way to get everything I wanted.

XP on all machines at this place, dose exactly what i want it to do, we wont be changing anytime soon, unless of coarse the computer blows up.
