JUPITER 17th July - clouds part, Jetstream doesn't!

Hi All, nice clear sky with seeing ranging from 1-3 - yuck. This is the best of it. First time I tried playing with VC deconvolution and FFT stuff... still don't know what I'm doing, but seems plenty of promise with the FFT.

Wouldn't bother posting, but it's been a bit of a jupiter drought... and not just up here by the look of it

The attached shows ME and VC deconvolutions and the second just a FFT high pass.

cheers,

Very nice mate. Great to see someone giving the FFT a lash. I've mucked around in that FFT high pass but didn't get the result I was looking for (I probably used the wrong settings).

Good stuff!

Hey mate
I prefer the left one. Good results for the conditions. Great to see you sticking with the 4x, as well.

Though once you add the filter wheel and adapters into the imaging train, you may need to go back to a 3x!

And yes, there has been a jupiter drought. I got some clear skies (and 16 avi's) on sunday night, but i've deleted most of them already and expect to delete the rest today

Ta Mike, that's one good? thing with the 4x powermate, the amplification with extension is failry subtle. It ranges from around 3.8x up to an absolute maximum of 4.5x with ~70mm extension. Hopefully should be OK!

cheers,

Nice work Rob

I haven't attempted any processing with FFT, but might have to give it a go.

Any advice as far as settings go?

I'm hopeful of getting reasonable conditions over the next few days now I've got a Televue 3x Barlow on the way.

Bit more image scale

Might also get an ext tube. Any recommendations on length?

Cheers

Hey Matt, Asi might be a better person to ask re settings, I've only just started playing around. The televue 3x I reckon will be pretty ideal for the C9.25... 2.5x not enough and 4xusually a bit too much. Reckon a 50mm extension would be a good thing to start with. I wouldn't buy one especially. You can use any old barlow you might have just unscrew the lens and voila... instant extension tube

cheers,

Any chance you could tell us what you did in FFT anyway?

sure Matt, I split the image first into separate R,G and B and then opened up the FFT thingy. There's four options, ideal lowpass, ideal highpass, butterworth lowpass and butterworth highpass. I simply selected each and played around with the "strength" setting while observing the preview pane to see the effects. To be frank I couldn't really work out a pattern. It seems the filter effects are most useful at very low (e.g. 1 or 2) settings and at very high >100 settings, whilst in between it all gets fuzzy. I don't know what's going on here? ANyway after getting what seemed like a sharper effect using the "ideal highpass" selection and a strength of "2" (i think) on each colour I recombined them and that was what produced the image on the right (a little colour balancing too as I'm having a lot of trouble with blue limb lately).

cheers,

Thanks Rob

Most helpful.
